Importance of proper HTML tagging

Posted in Internet Marketing, Web Development  by publisher

There are various web development tools out there that are available for business looking to build online. One such software that offers a lot of versatility is Dreamweaver by Adobe. Using the program does not require excessive attention to HTML source code. However, it is an advantage for web developers to have anywhere from basic to in-depth knowledge to make full use of the program to build websites. Therefore, basic understanding of HTML tags is necessary to facilitate troubleshooting of websites during post production.

HTML tags are simply a matter of opening and closing HTML commands. For example, to apply a font type to a specific stretch of copy, the tags <font> and </font> are used at the beginning and end of the copy respectively. Absence of either tag will render the HTML command incomplete, and thus cause errors in the HTML source code. While errors in tagging may not prevent a HTML from running, it will result in unintended results that will cause a web page to appear broken.

It is possible to use several HTML tags in a single portion of copy using the technique called “nesting”. Nesting tags simply means putting a set of tags within a set of tags. For example, bold tags <b> and </b> can be placed inside the copy that uses an earlier font tag. Just as long the order of tagging follows the right pattern, then the resultant HTML source code should not show any error. Thus, the web designer has to ensure all open tags are closed throughout the entire source code.

Correct HTML coding is also important for SEO and Google may penalize your rankings slightly if you do not use correct HTML tags.

How to Write a Web App

Posted in Web Development  by publisher

The web is a wonderful place with lots of opportunities for development, especially if you have a little bit of knowledge and know how to apply it properly. The ability to write web applications can be a great skill that will make your computer related tasks so much easier, and may even lead to you sharing it with others who have the same needs.

The first basic step to writing a good web application, is to find a free template. The reason you are looking for a free one is because in the beginning you may not have mapped out all the details of what you want yet, and this gives you plenty of wiggle room. Even if the template you use isn’t perfect, and it probably won’t be, you have the option of modifying the code to your specifications. This can take some time depending on how familiar you are with the language that the template was written in.

There are many different web languages for designing applications, but by limiting yourself to editing and modifying basic code that others have written, you will be learning the language without burning yourself out and getting engulfed in the complexities.

Some form of visual software will come in handy as well, these can be downloaded for free if you look for a highly rated one. Your purpose is not to be a graphic designer, but you will still find yourself having to deal with the visual aspect of the app nonetheless.

Five Signs of a Bad Client

Posted in Web Development  by publisher

Working as freelance web designer can be rewarding and frustrating at the same time. And most of this depends on the clients that you have, and how your working relationships with them are. And so, as most folks will know that the ones you enjoy working with can be broadly classified as ‘good clients’ while the others, are well, unfortunately ‘bad clients’ that you wish you hadn’t met.

So, here are some early signs that can help you determine whether a client will be easy to work with or now:

  1. No Supplies

If a client does not supply you with images, content and hosting among other things, then it’s most probable that you will not meet the agreed timeline, leading to other issues, particularly financial. After all, time is money… and your time is valuable too!

  1. Too picky

If a client complains about your initial mock ups by saying that they hate, it’s probable that a line has been crossed and it’s time to call it quits.

  1. Delays in Payments or is looking for someone who will work for low wages

If your client is looking for a bargain or doesn’t pay on time after several repeated requests, then it’s time to say good bye because as the ‘bargaining’ part, you will be working for lesser and feel ‘cheated’ in a way and as for the non-payment part, it’s like working for free.

  1. Doesn’t stick to the contract

Some clients who want to get the most out of you will continue to add new things as they go, and therefore it’s advisable that one gets a contract in place. If this happens despite a clear contract, then it’s time to go.

How to find a Good Web Design Company

With so many web designers out there it is very challenging to tell which designer or company is a good company, unless you do some research and are a little technical savvy. Here we will provide you some guidelines on how to find a good web design company.

1- Make sure the company you are picking knows exactly what you want and could deliver all the technical requirements. Often times if you pick an individual web designer, he may be good in graphic design, but not the back end development, often required for more advanced websites that have shopping carts, forms or applications. Make sure you pick a designer that is good in both or has resources to deliver both.

2-Talk to at least 3-5 companies before you pick one. Ask a lot of questions. Check their prices, features and portfolio.

3- Check to see who your competitor used. Often times the name of web designer might be in the footer of the website or may be in the source code.

4- Ask for references and their portfolio. See if they have designed similar websites to what you want in the past.

5- Check the name of the company in the search engines and use next to them words like “scam,” “fraud,” “complaints,” and “rip off.”  If any unsatisfied clients have posted anything negative about them, you may be able to find out this way.

6- Check BBB Better Business Bureau. Most companies doing business over one years should have a profile and customer feedbacks.

7- Don’t always pick the cheapest company. Make sure you feel comfortable with your designer and trust them. You may also consider a small test project first, to see how they perform. For example, you may pay them a small fee and ask for some mock ups before you actually pick them.

8- Choosing local or non-local or offshore companies, may often be a choice that you need to make. We would definitely recommend going local vs. non-local, so you can have in person meetings and you are also in the same time zone and could get a hold of your designer during business hours. However, if you are a little technically savvy or have someone in staff that is a little technically savvy, then you may consider an offshore company that could get the same job done for much cheaper.

9- There are several sites that you could post a job and designers compete and bid on your project. For example: Elance and 99designs.com. For local companies search in search engines and use words such as “web design” plus your city name. You may also look in craigslist or post an ad in craigslist.

10- Keep in mind that a web design by itself will not bring you traffic unless you do some marketing. Search engine marketing or search engien optimization (SEO) is very important. Most web designers will tell you that they will include search engine optimization in the deal. However, keep in mind that a good SEO firm will often cost much more than the price you pay to design your website. For example, for a small website design you may pay $2000, but often you may find that a good SEO company will charge you at minimum $1000/month.So if your designer is telling you that they will include SEO, find out what exactly they will include and compare it to quotes from other SEO firms. We recommend that you keep your web design firm separate from your SEO firm. We also recommend Submit Express Search Engine Marketing Services. They are a company that we used for some of our websites and they have been in business for 1998, so they definitely know what they are doing.

HIPAA Email Security

Posted in Web Development  by admin

The Department of Health and Human Services announced on August 1 that it has shifted responsibility of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 Security Rules to the Office for Civil Rights. This includes monitoring and enforcement of HIPAA email security rules designed to protect patients’ right to privacy.

Previously, the Centers for Medicare & Medicad Services had oversight of medical email privacy cases revolving around HIPAA Security Rules. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a release announcing the move that shifting responsibilities would eliminate duplication of efforts and increase the efficiency in managing patient security and personal rights protection.

“Security and privacy of health information are increasingly intersecting as the department works with the health industry to adopt electronic health records and participate in an even greater level of electronic exchange of health information,” said Secretary Sebelius. “Privacy and security are naturally intertwined, because they both address protected health information. Combining the enforcement authority in one agency within HHS will facilitate improvements by eliminating duplication and increasing efficiency.”
